Ed Holden Counselling

Hi, I’m Ed and thank you for visiting my website. I am based in Bridgend, South Wales and offer online and phone counselling across the UK. My approach is grounded in humanistic existentialism. It is a way of counselling which helps you to find your meaning and purpose, live in a more authentic way and navigate life’s challenges.

How I could help:

  • Open and honest conversations—nothing is off-limits
  • A focus on your whole self not just symptoms or labels
  • Compassionate, real support – not clinical or distant
  • Experience in addiction rehabilitation, criminal justice, and diverse cultures
  • A collaborative, respectful approach—shaped by your needs and pace
  • Help find meaning and clarity, especially during times of crisis or transition
  • Phone or online counselling
  • Free 15 minute discussion to see if you would like to work with me

Reasons people seek support

Sometimes life can get hard and confusing. As human beings we often find ourselves wondering why we feel the way we do. I aim to guide you in exploring your experiences, beliefs, questions and emotions. I find people often come to me with questions like:

  • What is the point of all this?
  • Am I being true to myself, or merely playing a role?
  • Am I living the life I was meant to live?
  • Am I making choices that align with who I truly am?
  • Why do I feel stuck, or why does change feel so hard?
  • Why do I feel disconnected from others?
  • What happens when life comes to an end?

And many more….

If these questions or feelings resonate with you, you are not alone. I invite you to bring your doubts, fears, and reflections to a safe, compassionate space. Together, we can explore what truly matters to you, gain clarity, and uncover the possibilities for meaningful change in your life.

A little bit about me

Thank you for taking the time to read this far and know a little about me.

Life has taken me on quite a journey. I am from South Africa and originally trained as a commercial pilot, but along the way I discovered a different kind of calling — one centred on people rather than planes. That path led me, together with my wife, to volunteer overseas, working with young people and children at risk. We helped set up youth clubs, built lasting friendships, and even learned some Hindi. These experiences opened my heart to different cultures and the power of genuine human connection.

After returning to the UK, I began working in a prison, and it was there that my passion for counselling truly took hold. I’ve always been someone who asks deeper questions of life, seeking to understand the “why” behind people’s choices and challenges. Working with people from all walks of life in such a complex environment taught me the importance of empathy, respect, and a non-judgemental approach.

I’m a Level 4 Diploma qualified Therapeutic Counsellor, hold a Level 2 IAPT qualification in Motivational Interviewing, and am a SMART(Self Management and Recovery Training) Recovery Facilitator and deliver training to better understand Mental Health in the workplace. In my current role, I train staff in delivering psychological interventions for individuals with complex needs.

Above all, I believe in creating a safe, supportive space where people feel truly heard and empowered to make meaningful changes in their lives. My work isn’t just a profession — it’s the culmination of all the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and the lessons I’ve learned along the way.
